Corey, I usually enjoy your posts, but I have to disagree with you on this one. I don't think it's fair to say that people only didn't like it because they are racist. There have been lots of other acts, including many black performers, whose halftime shows I have thoroughly enjoyed even though I did not know their music. I was entertained and could understand the lyrics/stories they were telling, the music had good melodies, and their costumes/lighting/dancing were awesome and entertaining.
My biggest issue with this one is that I could not hear a word he was saying, so how am I supposed to like or dislike his lyrics? I also thought most of the songs sounded similar and boring, even if I would have been able to hear the words. The dancing and the costumes were dull - where is the sparkle, where are the effects, lighting, etc. for the biggest yearly mainstream audience in America? This show is supposed to be for everyone, not just people who like his music and already know his lyrics and story about the feud with Drake (which I did know about, but again, I could NOT HEAR A WORD).
Please do not call people who didn't like the show racist - My dislike of the show has NOTHING to do with the color of his skin. I am a singer - I could not care less what color someone is, I just like good music and dancing regardless of who is performing it.
I never once said that anyone who didn’t like it was racist. Not once did I say that. You’re allowed to not like rap, that’s fine. You shouldn’t feel called out here cause it’s clearly not about you
I said nothing of his guests, just that he himself sucked lol. Least entertaining human being ever to be as successful as he was. Stiff as a board. Absolute dog shit lol
He did the job. He was NOT an entertainer. You right about that. He was not the reason to watch the show - like Lawrence Welk, Porter Wagoner or Jimmy Dean were. He was a blank that introed the shows. You right HE warn't nothin' but a window - getting in the way would have been a distraction. He got paid for being nothing. Great job.
I unfortunately did not understand 90% of the words sung. I’d catch a word here and there so I didn’t get it. That’s why I didn’t like it. If they were trying to get a story across and singing it like a musical- well, they’re not to my likings either. I just walked away and did other things.
Yes, Corey! Doesn’t it feel good when the truth is spoken?! Was listening to good music then read this and I’m inspired to dance the shake the rest of the afternoon. 🎶💃🏻
To the privileged, equality feels like oppression. Some folks have had it so good for so long, when the good gets spread around, they are angry because they feel entitled to privilege.
There will be college level courses taught on this performance (or at least should be). The depth of the iconography and each visual element is stunning and I wil admit I do not have it all in my head yet. This man is a genius, and God knows we sure don’t like genius in a black man in America!
The second segment of the course needs to be about the response to the performance from both white and black communities. One sees hope, inspiration and joy. The other sees…. well that is what needs to be brought forward and discussed!
Thanks for telling them about themselves, Corey. #Facts! Only one note: They didn't just hate too many Black men being on their TV, they hated that there were too many Black women too. This is particularly relevant after this country couldn't be bothered to elect a qualified Black and South Asian woman and chose the white supremacist sociopath guy instead.

Excellent essay buddy!
I agree with most of your essay, but Ed Sullivan had many different entertainers on his show, not just whites. He was fairly progressive as well

How bloody true. Just confirms who the real snowflakes are.

Always appreciate you, brother.👍🏾
