I have never been a fan of coconut because (and my Mom and I laugh about it) it smells like Hawaiian Tropic sunscreen and my Mom would slather it on when the family went to the lake, when we were little.

Hawaiian Tropic = hot car, windows open, no AC, heading for the lake.

The smell of Murphy's oil soap on the woodwork let us know that Mom had a bad day at work. She dusted away her frustrations.

You nailed this! I buy Balsam candles because they take me to the forest when I can’t be there for real. Vanilla Bean Noel smells like home to me. Pink Sugar lotion can make me happy all day and I’m out so I’m going to treat myself right now.

Smell of a bream bed. Takes m

e back to so many places. Fishing in the creek with white bread dough balls. In a pond with crickets behind my dad's carpet mill. With me cousins and Papaw on Weiss lake. Actually, this is making me feel melancholic. Still good memories though.

May be strange, but sauerkraut. My meemaw and I used to make homemade sauerkraut and it is one of my favorites

Leather from old saddles and Black Ice car fresheners 😅 pair it with a backroad drive, and I’m in high school again. Redneck aromatherapy has gotten me through more than one depression trip.

Corey, don’t know if you’re gonna see this on the “day after” but have you checked out Victoria’s Candles? It’s an online, family owned business in Texas and they have SO MANY scents you can get to custom blend your own combo and they will also custom blend for you. They’re so awesome! The icy evergreen type scents get me for Christmas vibes. I also love the fall leaves/wood smoke/cider type smells for fall.

Oh, Corey, I love when you share your coping techniques. Yankee Candle Cranberry Chutney. I use it year round for the very reason you described. The scent of vanilla from baking reminds me of a really positive time in my life. So, I have vanilla scented shower gels, lotions etc. & I rely on them when I’m struggling. Yes, Corey, you are on to something. People pay lots of money to find out these very skill sets to battle depression & you share your anecdotes with everyone. You’ve got a lot of wisdom for someone so young. I’m proud of you and the journey you are on. You have some powerful insights especially for younger people just trying to figure out what they’re going through. You lift me every time you open your mouth. Because somewhere, someone may need to hear your words. I believe that and I believe in you. Good night, ya’ll.

That Gay Guy Candle Co. sells a White Sage and Lavender candle that, oddly enough, smells JUST like my dad's original Old Spice that he wore his entire life. They've gone up to $29 for an 8-oz candle, though, and I'm having a hard time justifying buying more.

Bain de Soleil Orange Gelee sunscreen (if you can call SPF 4 "sunscreen," LOL) would take me right back to hanging out at the Edgerton pool or laying on our neighbor's porch roof or, god forbid, those horrid folding chaise lounges made of plastic tubes that left red marks all over your body.

Dried hay smells like horses, drinking crystal clear, icy cold well water out of the outside pump, eating watermelon and charcoal-blistered hot dogs, and drinking Ting soda out of a glass bottle. It also kind of reminds me of Kit Dooley, the 17-ish years old son of the guy who provided the baling equipment for us. 10-year-old me had such a huge crush on him. Also, is Kit Dooley just not a kick-ass name?

Don't feel bad about the step count. I listened to the Maintenance Phase episode on fitness trackers last week. 10,000 steps was purely a marketing gimmick, and also the name of the first tracker translated to "the 10,000 steps." They can be off by up to 20%., so you could be hitting your goal more days than you think you are. The target step count for the average person is 6-8,000, with the physical benefits starting to diminish after around 7,500. It also tends to make us feel bad if we don't hit our goal, and doesn't necessarily make us feel good when we do hit it. Just some food for thought. It made me feel a lot better when I heard that. It's just one more bit of pressure that we don't really need to be putting ourselves under.

I’ve heard that smell is the sense most connected to memory, and I believe that whole-heartedly. For me, it’s leather and sawdust (grew up showing horses) that takes me back to the simple joys of childhood.
