Playing catch-up with episodes. Absolutely ROLLING with laughter (spit out my coffee) when you started talking about the heat. So true! We are over it! And tomato sandwiches. Born in Ohio but married a Tennessee boy so I appreciate all the extra detail as I still try to understand it all, years later living in this state.
I know what you mean about seeing racist or otherwise objectionable items in antique shops and flea markets. I acquired a still-in-the-wrapper copy of Song of the South a few years ago. I haven't watched it (saw it as a kid) and sometimes think I should destroy it, but, whether we like it or not, it IS a movie Disney released. Does it deserve to be remembered so we know not to make that mistake again, or should it be allowed to die a natural death? Don't know.
Reminds me of what someone told me in a group setting, once. He collects WWII memorabilia and part of his collection that was captured by a group of US soldiers who all signed their names on it. Cool that signing their names to it was a big ole middle finger to the Reich, but without the context of WHY those names are on it, what does it stand for? There were people in the group who were horrified that he had it. I don't know the right thing to do there, either.
Speaking of things that shouldn't be forgotten intersecting with things that should be remembered for different reasons, back in the 70s there was a comedy group called The Committee (you can still find videos on YouTube). I saw them at a little venue in Atlanta called The Great Southeastern Music Hall, used to be in the corner at Lindbergh Plaza. Saw pre-hit Steve Martin and just hittin' Jimmy Buffett there, too. The Committee did a skit based on the Little Eva death scene from Uncle Tom's cabin that cracks me up to this day. I may even still have their albums.
Oh, and Corey, congrats on the AJC gig. I was a huge fan of Grizzard, back in the day, still have his books, one autographed. I have a subscription, so I will be looking up your columns, if I can figure out how to navigate their site.
