I would listen to a Harry Potter podcast.. I do not like JK Rowland and will not read anything else she puts out now.. but I've already read and seen the movies

I bet you're enough of a history buff that you know who Wilder Tower at the Chickamauga battlefield honors.

Maybe read another book? Octavia Butler or Ursula K. Leguin?

Corey, you did a great job in differentiating JKR’s writing and Bill Cosby’s comedy. While HP has never appealed to me, and I haven’t read it, I get why a reader isn’t thinking of her persona or actions while reading any of her work. Whereas, Cosby’s humor *is* Cosby, front and center.

It is difficult for me to justify putting any money in the pockets of those who have hurt others through words or deeds and I don’t do it.

Loved hearing and reading about your NE experience.

Rowling is one of the very few people who gave away the majority of her money to charities. The actual comments I read by her seemed like she was tired of PC language. My son said he read very anti-trans stuff from her, so I am ready to stand corrected. But, I love her books and know she has done some very positive things.

Separating the art from the artist only works when the artist is no longer profiting from the art. As a queer/trans fan of yours Corey, JKR’s position is that all trans women are violent men and rapists/sexual assailants and trans men (like myself) are poor confused women who suffer from internalised misogyny. She openly mocks and dogpiles trans people *and* cis people who disagree with her. She said openly she comforts herself with royalty checks she gets off HP so it IS something that ... yes it’s complicated but supporting her work supports her directly still.

Isn’t it so baffling that someone who created something so magical and wonderful could also be a RAVING sack of shit? It’s honestly almost impossible for me to comprehend. I so sorry for what you go through every day... that’s also something I can’t comprehend. Thanks for being here and thank you for explaining just exactly how awful JK is

It truly is! But you are absolutely right in that it’s a conversation that has nuance to it--I’m a huge fan of Lovecraftian horror, for example. HP Lovecraft was a racist pile of horseshit, but he created my favourite genre (btw love Old Gods of Appalachia, genuinely my new hyperfixation podcast) so I fully understand where you’re coming from.

Ps. I love history too. If you ever wanna talk Vikings i can give you a whole BUNCH of resources. Someone may potentially theoretically be writing a viking based fantasy novel...*whistles innocently*

Can I send you some money to bet for me lol?

I hated Harry Potter from day one. I love Lord of the Rings and Neil Gaiman and there was both a thing about "Harry Potter is better" so teenage me was like "FUCK THAT SHYTE ASS LOTR RIPOFF FRODO WITH PUBERTY ACNE SHIT" and then later it turned out it mightve been a rip off of a Neil Gaiman story about a boy with a scar on his forehead and an owl going to a wizard school. So I never read it till later. But then I read it and I hated it more. There's some bits where Rowling shows her ass and writes in some veiled queer hate. If you make a podcast about Harry Potter ...I think the way to do that is when you get to those parts...where she sprinkles some bigotry on top..you have to point it out if you see it and if you don't see it, see what others are saying about it. Separating the art from the artist is difficult because art is part of the artist. So don't. Deconstruct the art and show where their artist poisoned their work with their bs. I'll do one for ol jrr Tolkien. Lord of the Rings is my blood. And yet every fucking culture in LOTR that isn't non human but also isn't coded white..is written like "ooo lookit these dirty savages we must SAVE THEM, both from sauron and from themselves" crinkly ol British politely racist bs. This is an easy thing to do and you're gonna find it in ALL art because art reflects the artist. And while I loathe Rings of Power for the Canon murdering badly written money grab that it is...they did get one thing right. They pointed it out by trying to address it. They did a bad job of addressing it (casting black actors isn't really fixing the racism in the story because they didn't reframe the characters who got treated racist like in the books) . I think I've made my point and also not so subtly flashed a digital butt tattoo that says "IM HERE FOR NERD SHIT" lol

I...feel like if you and I compared our diagnoses we would prolly have one in common cuz obviously I ramble on and on and on...twice as hard if someone is rambling first.

I lied. Look up queercoding and it's relationship to the Hayes code(I think it's spelled Hayes. The thing way back in the day where they dictated "appropriate" TV and film content). Now I'll shut up. Shut up Phoenix
