I’m not delusional enough to think that a good ole scratch-made buttermilk biscuit could bring about world peace. Still, I do wholeheartedly believe it could buy you some time during negotiations. There’s something about a perfectly crisp exterior mixed with the steamy and fluffy interior when eaten fresh out of the oven that makes me consider the possibility of a loving God for a brief moment.
I can see the tin pan in my memory with her wrinkled but strong hands sprinkling the flour on the counter to roll out the biscuits. What was her recipe? Don’t know, she never used one.
I was married before I learned that not everyone used biscuits for strawberry shortcake.
I am loving these essays! Making homemade buttermilk biscuits like my grandmother kept me sane through the first chunk of the pandemic. That and the cobbler eventually necessitated the purchase of a treadmill, but it was worth it. I inherited her old biscuit pan and cutter--an old metal thermos cap that she punched holes in with an ice pick. Your writing about your Granny really takes me back home. Thank you!!!
I know you cannot hear me so i am going to write this in all caps so you hopefully understand the importance:
GRRRRRR!!!!! YOU ARE SO FREAKING PRECIOUS!!!! We are SOOOO BLESSED that you share with us, thank you THANK YOU THANK YOU. I hope this holiday season treats you especially kind and that you get all the biscuits you want, dear sir. BE WELL and thank you. Much love from Minnesota.
