If you happen to walk by and happen to have your phone in hand and happen to have your phone open to your camera app...i dunno...stuff...and things...lol. just a thought. your ma sound adorable. have a great trip and looking forward to the book!
A month in the UK - lucky you! I second Dave Fields comments below on the London food recs. I hope you are traveling north to York. Such a fun town with friendly people! Go to the Jorvik Viking Center which has a ride (kinda like Haunted Mansion at Disneyland) that has Viking SMELLS! It was awesome! AND, across the street from that attraction is "The Hole in Wand" indoor wizard mini golf! :) Have a great trip and I look forward to your posts!
Short(ish) version: "The pike in this case is short for turnpike, which can refer to any main road but originally referred specifically to one on which tolls were collected. In Middle English, the turnpike was a revolving frame, studded with spikes, that served as a barrier, preventing traffic (presumably a horse) from advancing until the driver paid the toll.
As the chief roads that connected cities and towns before highways, turnpikes brought untold and unforeseen things: visitors, freight, opportunity. So the use of down the pike to describe the arrival of the unknown makes sense."
My wife and I just went to London over Spring Break and loved it. If you have not been yet, the Borough Market was a pretty rad spot. Also, Dishoom for better Indian food than we have had here in the States. Enjoy. Skew!
Have a fabulous time in London. I was there in early May for work. Have a scone with clotted cream. Decadent.

Corey, I’m not at all surprised they asked you to write a book. I love your writing.
I just looked up "coming down the pike" because it annoyed me that I didn't know what it meant or why it isn't "pipe."
